Intent
As a church school, Religious Education plays an important role at Grampound Road. The principal aim is for children to explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live. We believe the subject should provoke challenging questions about meaning and purpose, beliefs about God, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human. Our intent is that our Religious Education curriculum develops pupils' aptitude for respectful yet curious dialogue and healthy debate. We believe that RE should encourage pupils to develop their sense of identity and belonging. RE as a subject plays a vital role in preparing pupils for adult life, employment and lifelong learning. It enables pupils to develop respect and sensitivity to others, in particular those whose faiths and beliefs are different to their own. It promotes discernment and enables pupils to combat prejudice which will enable pupils to participate positively in our society, with its diverse religions and beliefs.
Implementation
At Grampound Road we follow ‘The Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education in Cornwall’ 2020-2025. The syllabus is based around a key question approach, where the questions open up the content to be studied. The teaching and learning has three core elements: making sense of beliefs, making connections and understanding the impact. Teachers plan carefully to ensure that RE is an enjoyable and thought-provoking subject. It may be taught in a ‘whole class’ setting but with flexibility to allow for discussion, questioning and reflection in small groups and individually. A variety of teaching approaches are encouraged for example: role play, story-telling, drama, art and local visits. The syllabus has a spiral format whereby children will revisit and build on the topics throughout their school journeys. Reflection is also a key part of our RE curriculum and we have adopted the Self, World, Others and Beyond model to encourage the children to think deeply and develop their spirituality.
